Bus Shelter, Bridge Road Renovation Project

The Parish Council has successfully achieved funding for the restoration of its bus shelter in Bridge Road

This project has kindly been part-funded by:

Borough Council King’s Lynn & West Norfolk’s Community Infrasture Levy Scheme

and

Norfolk County Council’s Parish Partnership Scheme

The current brick shelter was built in the early/mid 1900’s and is a quaint, solid structure but was in urgent need of a complete refurbishment, together with improved security by way of windows (which were boarded up on both sides due to vandalism) and the introduction of seating and lighting to provide a quality waiting environment that reduces fear of crime and improves passengers’ overall public transport experience.

Works Undertaken

The bus shelter required the existing Asbestos roofing sheets to be removed and disposed of safely via a fully licenced Asbestos waste removal company.

The new flat roof was then constructed with timber groove sheets and covered with a two layer torch on mineral felt.  The first layer (underlay) consists of a glass fibre material with the modified bitumen underlay, finished with fine sand.  The second layer (capsheet) is a membrane made with a mix of glass and polyester reinforcements coated with a layer of modified bitumen and with an attractive mineral finish. This mix gives the capsheet a dimensional stability and a high temperature performance.

The existing timber fascia boards were replaced with black woodgrain UPVC fascia boards to eliminate future maintenance.  The fascia boards have a treated timber roofing batten fixed to them to create a drip run for the flat roof.

The existing window frames were removed from the existing openings and replaced with bespoke timber frames constructed with a softwood frame and a hardwood cill.  The frames have been finished in black to match the new fascia.  The windows are 10mm clear Polycarbonate as this is 250 times stronger than glass and is virtually indestructible.

The interior of the bus shelter has been painted white to brighten it up, the internal ceiling timber has been reinforced securely and the building has been fitted with a recycled traditional looking bench and interior solar powered light.

The existing growth on the bus shelter has been completely removed to allow for the brickwork of the bus shelter to be fully repointed on the front elevation to make the structure look more attractive, and repointing has been undertaken on the two side elevations where required.

Thanks are extended to Centaurus Construction for their contracted work on this project.
